Traffic laws and rules of the road should be followed at all times. And because of the added dangers of being in such close proximity to cars, extra considerations need to be made. Understanding and following these tips will make things safer for every rider
Safe Bike Riding Tips
• Make sure you are wearing a properly fitting helmet at all times. Not only is the fit important, but wearing a helmet in general.
• Make sure that the bike is the right size for whoever is riding it. To check this, stand over the bike and make sure there is 1-2 inches between the individual and tube bar. If it is a mountain bike, 3-4 inches. Also, the seat height should be adjusted to allow a slight bend when the rider’s leg is fully extended. The seat and handlebars should be the same height.
• Check all equipment to ensure it will handle properly. Check the air in the tires, brakes, and so on.
• No matter the time of day, wear bright colors: white, neon, fluorescent, or something else that will make sure you’re seen. Flashing lights and reflective tape are recommended to be prominently displayed on your bike. Even though a biker may see a driver, the driver may not always see the biker.
• If you have to carry books or other items, store them in a backpack, a carrier, or in a basket. It is important to maintain proper control over the bicycle at all times.
• Stay clear of any road hazards. Avoid potholes, loose gravel, broken glass, dogs, leaves, or any other item that is an obstruction and could cause a fall.
• Make sure to be aware of your surroundings and to have an idea of the route you are going if you’ll be on higher trafficked roads.
• Riding at night is extremely dangerous. If you must ride at night, make sure you can be easily seen.
• Before you ride, give your bike a quick inspection to make sure everything is ready to go.
These tips should help to avoid getting into a bicycle accident. With such little room on the side of the road and little protection, biking can be an extremely dangerous activity. Safety should always come first when riding a bike. This will assure the overall best experience.
